Tired Is the New Normal. Or Is It?

In a world filled with long hours, endless notifications, and mounting expectations, feeling tired all the time has become common.

But there is a big difference between being overworked and having a medical condition that depletes your energy.

Two terms that often get mixed up are Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Burnout. And both of them are quite common among the citizens of Bangalore.

Understanding the difference can help you get the right support, the right diagnosis, and the right treatment.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex medical condition that affects the nervous system, immune system, and energy metabolism.

Diagnostic Criteria (based on CDC guidelines):
  • Fatigue lasting longer than 6 months
  • Worsening of symptoms after mental or physical exertion (called Post-Exertional Malaise or PEM)
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Either cognitive dysfunction (often called brain fog) or orthostatic intolerance (feeling dizzy or faint when standing)

CFS is not caused by stress or lifestyle. It is a physical condition often linked to infections, immune dysfunction, or trauma. The World Health Organization recognizes it as a neurological disorder.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a psychological condition caused by chronic workplace stress. It is not classified as a disease, but as an occupational phenomenon by the World Health Organization.

How to Treat Each Condition

Managing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

  • Pacing your energy and avoiding overexertion
  • Treating specific symptoms such as sleep issues or pain
  • Working with a multidisciplinary team that may include a general physician, neurologist, and physiotherapist
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy for coping support (not a cure)
Managing Burnout:
  • Taking a break from work or shifting roles
  • Setting healthy boundaries in personal and professional life
  • Seeking psychological counseling or coaching
  • Incorporating exercise and mindfulness to rebuild resilience

Both burnout and chronic fatigue can leave you feeling like a shadow of yourself. But while burnout is usually temporary and linked to lifestyle, CFS is a chronic, medical condition that needs long-term care. Understanding the difference is the first step toward reclaiming your energy and your well-being.

If you're unsure which one you're facing, talk to your doctor.

The right diagnosis changes everything.
